Latvia

Latvia is an independent country in North-Central Europe, one of the three to have a coastline on the Baltic Sea. It shares borders with the countries Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus and Russia. It also has a coastline on the Gulf of Riga. Latvia consists mostly of fertile lowland with many lakes and hills in the eastern part of its 24,932 square miles of land. The capital of the country is Riga (Rīga), a city situated on both banks of the Daugava River, about nine miles above the river’s mouth on the Gulf of Riga. Latvia is an active member of several international organizations including the United Nations and the European Union.

Latvia can be considered as a worthwhile location to study abroad. This is due to several reasons such as the numerous accredited universities, the relatively affordable tuition fees and costs for living. To begin with, the country has a rather extensive list of internationally recognized and accredited institutions of higher education, including the University of Latvia, the Riga Technical University, and the Daugavpils University. Similarly, the sovereign state also has a wide selection of study programs which can be chosen in languages such as Latvian, French, German, English, Spanish and Italian. Furthermore, Latvia is a country which has a relatively high standard of living, yet the cost of living in the form of everyday expenses is low. Likewise, the tuition costs, while varying in range, are less costly compared to European countries such as France or the UK.
