Lebanon, officially known as Al-Jumhūrīyah al-Lubnānīyah/Lubnān/the Republic of Lebanon, is an independent country in Western Asia. It is situated on the Mediterranean Sea’s eastern shore at the foot of the Lebanon Mountains and consists of a relatively narrow strip of territory spanning about 4,036 square miles. Because of its relatively small total land area Lebanon is among the smallest countries in the world. The capital of the sovereign state is Beirut (Bayrūt, Beyrouth), which also serves as its chief port. Beirut is furthermore the largest city of country. Lebanon shares its borders with the countries Syria, and Israel.
